Plot summary
Jeff Lowry is a high school guidance counselor. Anne Martin is his friend and colleague at the same school. Both are responsible, well meaning, and kind, and both are boring. They watch their peers find love and companionship while their own attempts at romance fail. When their loneliness reaches a breaking point, they make a pact. Each will set aside a familiar, unexciting persona and try out a confident alter ego instead. Jeff gives up his awkward all-male book club, and Anne gives up her efforts to catch the eye of Max, Jeff's neighbor. They head out for summer nights of drinking, dancing, and sex.
