Plot summary
At Dartmoor Academy, principal Morgan Brinway has his second-graders studying opera appreciation. Five of them, Sonny, Loaf, Domino, Lucy and Witz, skip class to build contraptions around the school grounds. They take groundskeeper Roy's leaf blower and Brinway's desk chair for one of Sonny's flying-chair ideas. The leaf blower runs out of gas before it destroys Brinway's new convertible, but Roy shears the car's side door with his mower's edging blade. Brinway warns the five that one more mistake means expulsion. On an aquarium field trip, the children find a sea lion named Slappy and decide he does not feel good there. They smuggle him aboard the school bus and plant him in Brinway's hot tub.
