Plot summary
An implant in the right hand or forehead is required of everyone under the Antichrist, known as the Leader, in the end-times after the rapture. Taking the mark means joining the Community; refusing means jail and, three weeks later, a guillotine. Two renegades refuse the mark and steal a car for a friend, only to find he has taken it and feels happier; police take them away. In the same jail is Tom Newman, a smuggler caught by a unit led by his ex-wife, Jeseca Newman, who has taken the mark. She has him tortured until he agrees to enter a Christian group inside the jail and kill Elijah Cohen, a rebel leader still at large. If he runs, she says, Preston Scott will have him.
