Plot summary
Harry Belafonte is born into poverty in Harlem in 1927, the son of an immigrant mother who sends him to Jamaica for his childhood years. He discovers theater as a young man, trains as an actor, and goes on to success as a singer and an actor. The film touches on that entertainment career, but its interest lies in the work he did for civil rights in America and for social justice in other countries. Belafonte himself discusses that activism in an interview about the film, and the account records his efforts for African Americans and Native Americans, for Hispanics and for people in Africa.
