Plot summary
Vinnie, Carter and Rosie start out as young swindlers in Azusa, fixing races by running a fast horse where a slow one was expected and collecting at long odds. When a track official discovers the trick, the three of them build a blackmail case against him. Two decades later Carter and Rosie are married, living in Kentucky as successful racers, and are preparing to sell their prize stallion, Simpatico. Vinnie has become a drunk in Pomona. He sets his mind on Rosie, draws Carter to California, takes his wallet, and sets out for Kentucky carrying the old blackmail material. Carter turns to Cecilia, a grocery clerk and a friend of Vinnie, and asks her to follow Vinnie and bring back what he keeps in a box.
