Plot summary
Ming Wang grows up poor in China during the Cultural Revolution. He leaves for the United States and becomes an eye surgeon. He is later asked to treat an orphan girl in India who has been blinded by her stepmother. Restoring her sight means confronting the upheaval he experienced as a young man, and he must work through those memories while he tries to help her.
