Plot summary

Richard Portman is driving his son Stephen to boarding school when they argue, and the car swerves into oncoming traffic. Richard is killed and Stephen is left in a persistent vegetative state. Six months on, Richard's second wife Mary, a child psychologist, cares for Stephen at home in rural New England, where she also sees patients. One of them, a deaf-mute boy named Tom, is to move to a school in Boston. Mary finds Tom asleep in her car and brings him inside; soon after, he is gone, and a police search finds nothing. In the following nights she hears noises in the house and glimpses Tom in the dark. Her therapist, Dr. Wilson, calls it parasomnia. A patient's father, Doug Hart, invites her out. An ice storm is approaching, and Mary declines invitations to leave.
