Plot summary
Zoe Trainer, a cellist, gives a concert that the Wymans attend, and there Dr. Ralph Wyman and Marian, his wife, fall in with Stuart Kane, who is out of work, and Stuart's wife Claire, a clown hired for parties; the two couples arrange a Sunday dinner. Helicopters spray the city for medflies while these lives cross. Marian's sister Sherri is married to Gene Shepard, a policeman who cheats on her. Doreen Piggot, a waitress whose husband Earl drives a limo, hits a boy with her car. The child, Casey, seems unharmed at first, then loses consciousness at home and is taken to a hospital, where his parents Howard and Anne wait. Howard's estranged father Paul turns up there, and a baker keeps calling about a cake the family ordered.
