Plot summary
Shirley Chisholm arrives in Congress as the first Black woman elected to represent Brooklyn. A colleague needles her daily about the salary they both receive, and she is placed on an agricultural committee though her district is urban. At Christmas 1971 she learns voters raised twice the sum she had asked to put her on the ballot, and she decides to run for president in 1972, the first Black candidate to seek a major-party nomination and the first woman to seek the Democratic one. Her husband Conrad, Mac Holder and Arthur Hardwick Jr. take on security, campaign advising and finances. She recruits Robert Gottlieb, a Cornell student, to coordinate student voters who have just gained the vote, and brings in Stanley Townsend as campaign manager.
