Plot summary
In November 1903, the body of a shabbily dressed young woman is found on the Thames mud flats at low tide, a silk stocking down her throat. Police take her for a prostitute. Dr. Watson is unconvinced and seeks out his old friend Sherlock Holmes, who has retired from detective work and is at loose ends. Holmes studies the evidence, including a thumbprint, a pair of dancing shoes, broken glass and a strong smell of chloroform, and concludes the victims are well-born ladies, not street women. Holmes also questions a young survivor, a girl her captor released because of her club foot.
