Plot summary
Kaleb is a German Shepherd living with a Jewish family in Berlin. After the Nuremberg Laws are passed, the dog loses that home and an SS officer takes him in. The officer teaches Kaleb to attack and round up Jewish prisoners at a camp, where Kaleb is cared for and does his duties well. Then a scent he knows distracts him: Joshua, the boy from his old household, has been brought to the camp as a prisoner. Kaleb's loyalty to the boy has not faded, and Joshua is given work feeding the animals, which lets the two of them spend time together.
