Shanghai Kiss (2007) on Netflix

Plot summary

Liam Liu, a Chinese American actor in Los Angeles, auditions for a toothpaste commercial and is rejected because the screeners do not consider him Asian enough. His car has been towed, so he takes the bus home, where Adelaide Bourbon, a high school student, shows him a drawing she has made of him. The two become friends, which leaves Liam uneasy about her age, and his friend Joe Silverman tells him no good can come of it. Adelaide asks him to the prom and he declines. Then his father, Mark, calls with news that his grandmother has died and left him a small house in Shanghai. Liam sets off for China, promising to call Adelaide every day.
