Plot summary
Elinor and Marianne Dashwood lose their father's fortune and are left with no money. They look for ways to pay their bills. People they meet look down on them and try to hold them back. Love comes into the mix, and working out whom to trust becomes a mine field. They must balance their feelings with good judgment, or they could lose what they hold dear.

- Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of India, is often cited as a potential inspiration for Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. Parallels include rumored illegitimate daughters and early departures to India at age seventeen, and scholar Linda Robinson Walker argues Hastings 'haunts' the novel.
- Jane Austen paid to publish Sense and Sensibility, with the cost exceeding a third of her annual household income of £460. She made a profit of £140 on the first edition, which sold all 750 copies by July 1813.
- Jane Austen wrote the first draft of Sense and Sensibility in epistolary form, possibly as early as 1795 when she was 19, or in 1797 at 21. She originally titled it Elinor and Marianne and later revised it into a continuous narrative with its current title.
