Plot summary
Frank Slade is a retired Army lieutenant colonel, a blind Vietnam veteran who has become cantankerous and cynical. His niece Karen Rossi hires Charlie Simms, a scholarship student at Baird, to watch her uncle over Thanksgiving weekend; Charlie needs the pay for a Christmas flight home to Gresham, Oregon. Charlie has a second problem: he and George Willis Jr. saw three classmates douse the headmaster's Jaguar with flour and water, and Mr. Trask privately offers Charlie acceptance to Harvard if he names them, with a disciplinary committee meeting set for the Monday after the holiday. After the family leaves, Frank tells Charlie that the two of them are going to New York City for Thanksgiving.

- To understand what it feels like to be blind, Al Pacino met clients of New York's Associated Blind, who traced the entire progression for him from knowing they would never see again through to acceptance; the Lighthouse advocacy group schooled him in finding a chair, pouring liquid and lighting a cigar.
- Martin Brest was approached in April 1991 and chose this film over another remake he was offered, Death Takes a Holiday, which he later made as Meet Joe Black, released in 1998 starring Brad Pitt, Claire Forlani and Anthony Hopkins.
- Ovidio G. Assonitis, who had originated the project and chose to go uncredited on the final cut, took out a full-page advert in Variety congratulating Tom Pollock, Universal Pictures and Martin Brest for making the adaptation successful and praising Pacino on his Oscar win.

- Jack Nicholson was offered the role of Lt. Col. Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, but he turned the part down.
