Plot summary
Three youths gather in a cornfield, and Mitch tells them about Lester Dwervick. Lester is a social outcast at Emerald Grove High School who lives in a trailer park with his mother, a frequent drunk who brings men home from the local bar. Classmates pick on him daily. Judy Patterson, the sheriff's daughter, is the only one who treats him kindly. Lester shows a drawing to Stephanie after she picks him as her science partner and asks her to the prom, but she and the others mock him. At The French Bulldog, the fast food place where he works, the torment continues; Judy stands up for him and is thrown out. At home, his mother's newest boyfriend harasses him. Lester draws pictures of birds to hold on to hope.
