Plot summary
At a Christmas party in Joyce Stone's apartment, Alex Monet demonstrates his scanner abilities and, distracted by a guest, accidentally kills his best friend. Cleared of blame, he goes to Thailand and enters a monastery to master his abilities. Two years later, a gang attacks Joyce and Helena in an alley, and Helena's scanner ability saves them. She suffers severe migraines from the voices in her head, so her stepfather Elton Monet, who runs a pharmaceutical company, is developing an experimental patch called EPH-3 to suppress scanner powers. He refuses to let her try it until he has studied its side effects. Helena takes a patch in secret. Her migraines stop, and her personality changes.
