Plot summary
Sangre de Cristo, a small town on the Arizona-Mexico border, loses all 57 of its residents on the night of June 2, 2011. Most of the bodies are never found, and the remains that are discovered are dismembered and carry human bite marks. Francisco Salazar, a handyman and amateur photographer who entered the country illegally years earlier, is caught trying to cross into Mexico. He is a loner and a drifter, and the killings are pinned on him. He also faces an accusation involving Grace Putnam, the young daughter of the missionary Duane Putnam, a friend of his; other residents say the friendship was innocent. Salazar refuses to speak and grants a single interview to a criminal psychologist. He says he took his camera out that night to document what happened and lost the film while he fled.

- Whelan said the project began with the idea of a found-footage film told through still photography instead of regular grainy video, which they felt had been done a little, then tied to a local landscape and an immigration angle.
- Whelan said that since they could not shoot in a courtroom they used someone who could draw courtroom sketches, and that Phil knew an architect who made an architectural rendering of the town, details added to make the film feel real.
