Plot summary
Marie Pettis has recently divorced Greg, a politician caught in a widely publicized scandal. She leaves for a weekend upstate with her new boyfriend Robert, a stockbroker, her sister Shirley and their friend Nicky. Arriving late, they stop in a small town, where Robert, Marie and Shirley buy groceries and Shirley buys a sinister face mask as a joke, and Nicky is harassed by two men in a bar. The group reaches the isolated farmhouse Robert recently purchased from Otis, a local man who is building a large schooner for Robert in the barn. Jay Alsop, an engineer who is a friend of Robert's, comes to check on the boat's progress, and lumberman Mac Macauley tells Marie a local rumor about Otis and a young woman.

- Savage Weekend was screened at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival with a botched aspect ratio that left boom mics visible, so David Paulsen and his wife sat through the screening covering the top and bottom edges of the frame with tape to create the intended ratio.
- The project began after an investor who had agreed to fund a different David Paulsen film withdrew most of the promised money and allotted only $20,000 instead, so Paulsen wrote an original horror screenplay that could be made with few resources.
- Caitlin O'Heaney, a recent Juilliard graduate who had just performed on Broadway with Katharine Hepburn, auditioned for the film at her agent's suggestion and said she took the part to establish herself within the Screen Actors Guild.
