Plot summary
At Salar de Uyuni, an ecological disaster has left an expanding toxic salt flat after two rivers were diverted for irrigation and the project failed. A United Nations inquiry sends Dr. Laura Sommerfeld, Dr. Fabio Cavani, and Dr. Arnold Meier to Bolivia. The consortium blamed for the damage is led by a chief executive who has the three scientists taken upon landing. The nearby supervolcano Uturunku is showing ground-lift, a possible sign of an eruption. To keep them out of the way, the two male scientists are fed food that causes severe digestive distress. Laura is taken out onto the salt flat and left near a rocky outcropping with Huascar and Atahualpa, two nearly blind children. They have food and water for a week.
