Plot summary
In May 1945, German forces still fight in the Harz Mountains, and the gap between the Allied spearhead and the supply columns behind it is nicknamed The Void. An American M18 Hellcat called The Avenging Angel fires on a German POW camp watchtower, and the freed prisoners include a British lieutenant named Goss. Captain Briton McConkie sends Sergeant Atwood, commander of the Angel, and Sergeant Whitaker of another M18, Annie, to clear an area the Germans still defend. The Angel's crew includes Corporal Simms and privates Barlow and Mitchell. Sergeant Jesse Owens is reassigned to drive a truck in the convoy, and some of the white soldiers do not respect him. The convoy meets a decoy body in the road, and a hidden Panzer III destroys one of the trucks. Owens escapes with Goss.
