Director Ryan Little and his producer Adam Abel struggled with the idea of a sequel because nearly all of the main characters died in the first Saints and Soldiers, but the popularity of that film convinced them to make one anyway.- The story was inspired by L. Vaughn Curtis's book Letters Home: A Paratrooper's Story, based on the experience and letters of Curtis's father Harland "Bud" Curtis, and adapted from Little's short film The Last Good War, for which he won a Student Emmy award.
