Plot summary
Vivian Heldon, a B-girl, works in a Boston bar. She calls James Joshua Harkley, a married man she has been seeing, and says she is in trouble, but he does not come. She talks a drunk stranger, Henry Shanway, into letting her drive his car toward Cape Cod, and when he sees how far they have gone he wants to turn back. Months later a skeleton is found on a Massachusetts beach. Detective Peter Morales takes the case, and Dr. McAdoo of Harvard Medical School studies the bones.
