Plot summary
Nick Charles and his wife Nora arrive at a San Francisco racetrack expecting a quiet afternoon, and Lieutenant Abrams meets them with news that a jockey named Goldez was found shot in a shower stall the day after he threw a race. Major Jason I. Sculley, a special deputy for the state legislature, and reporter Paul Clarke come to the house to ask Nick to look into the killing. He turns them down but keeps Paul's tickets to a wrestling match, so the Charleses spend the evening at the arena instead. There, reporter Whitey Barrow threatens Claire Porter, the girlfriend of the arena owner Link Stephens, and takes her diamond bracelet to settle a debt. Paul's fiancée Molly Ford has been working undercover in Stephens' office.
