Plot summary
Patients with lesser complaints are passed along to Dr. Charles Conway's psychiatric institute by an associate, Dr. Loren Wright, and Conway uses them as subjects in his secret experiments with artificial glands, which he hopes will produce longevity. His assistant Dr. Sharon Gilchrist and his minion Lobo serve the work. Wright's newest delivery is Grace Thomas, who seeks help for depression; Conway objects that she has living relatives. Wright asks for a demonstration of how far the experiments have come, and Conway takes him down to the basement. That night, Lobo discovers Frank Scott on the grounds, and Conway, rather than hand him to the police, offers him a place as a subject.

- Boris Petroff produced and directed The Unearthly as "Brooke L. Peters", one of only two films he made under that name, and it was shot in roughly five days under the title The House of Monsters.
- The film credits Jane Mann with the original story, but her co-screenwriter John D. F. Black, credited as Geoffrey Dennis, said she merely typed the script.
- Production designer Charles D. Hall, the art director of Dracula and Frankenstein, built the operating room and the creature holding cell from found props, and the monsters' turret was his tribute to Island of Lost Souls (1932).
