Trailer
Plot summary
Harlan Ellison is a speculative fiction writer and essayist, and the documentary follows him and the work. The first footage dates from 1981, when a twenty-four-year-old producer filmed the author at his typewriter for a television segment. Ellison did not expect those sessions to grow into a professional production, and he let the camera keep coming back over the following decades. That material, edited together with archive film and with conversations among colleagues and fans, forms a portrait that moves through his life and his stories. The title is taken from a three-volume collection of his writing published in 1991.

- Producer Erik Nelson was 24 when he began shooting footage of Harlan Ellison at his typewriter in 1981 for a PBS segment. Ellison let him film and interview him for years because he thought Nelson was a fan working on a student project, never suspecting a professional production.
- In September 2007 the documentary had its Midwestern debut at Cleveland Public Library in Ellison's home town, a screening that was also Ellison's last public appearance.
