Plot summary
Billie Holiday, known as Lady Day, ranked among the greatest jazz vocalists and sang 'God Bless the Child', 'Saddest Tale' and 'Strange Fruit'. In 1971 the journalist Linda Lipnack Kuehl began work on what was meant to be Holiday's definitive biography, and over the following years she taped more than 200 hours of interviews on audio cassettes. The people she questioned included family members, friends, band members, piano players, psychiatrists, 1930s Harlem peers and a pimp. Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Jo Jones and Sylvia Syms were among the jazz figures who contributed recollections. Kuehl died in 1978 with the book unfinished and the tapes unheard; they now form the basis of a documentary.
