Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story (2019) on Netflix

Plot summary

In early-1980s Northern California, young people who loved UFO, Iron Maiden and Motörhead had little chance of seeing them play. Those bands were English and seldom came to the West Coast, so the kids built a scene of their own: playing in bands, printing fanzines, booking rooms such as Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley and swapping tapes. More than fifty first-person interviews with the bands at the center of that story, among them Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament and Death Angel, are woven together with animation and photography. The film gives particular weight to bands that never reached the popularity of Metallica yet mattered just as much to the scene, starting with the thrash forefathers Exodus.
