Plot summary
Sam Dunn wrote his graduate thesis on Guatemalan refugees before turning to a culture he joined at twelve: heavy metal. As an anthropologist he sets out to record how the music's styles began and how its followers live with the hostility the genre attracts. His travels take him to Britain, Germany, Norway, Canada and the United States, and to the Wacken Open Air festival. He interviews musicians from metal's past and present alongside sociologists, journalists and record producers, and traces a family tree of subgenres that branches from early metal into the new wave of British heavy metal, thrash, death, black, glam, power and nu metal. He also covers the genre's obsession with sexuality, religion, violence and death.
