Plot summary
In her early twenties, Ruby Lee Gissing leaves the small Tennessee town where she grew up after her mother's death and travels to Panama City, Florida, a resort town she knew from childhood visits. She arrives in the fall as the tourist season winds down and applies at Chambers Beach Emporium, a souvenir store whose owner, Mildred Chambers, turns her down until Ruby says she has done retail before and works cheap. Through the year that follows, Ruby writes in a journal about her job, her past and her future, talks with her friend Rochelle Bridges, and spends time with Ricky Chambers, Mildred's son, and Mike McCaslin.
