Plot summary
Thérèse is an orphan. Her widowed aunt, Madame Raquin, has brought her up in a backstreet shop in Lyon and married her to her own son, Camille, a sickly young man and Thérèse's cousin. Laurent, a lively Italian truck driver, comes into the household and is struck by Thérèse at once, and she gives in to him. She refuses to leave her husband and her aunt. When Camille and his mother learn what is going on between the two, they make a plan to get rid of Thérèse: Camille is to escort her by train to Paris and leave her with another aunt.
