Eddie Dean

Biography

Eddie Dean was an American Western singer and actor from Texas whose baritone impressed Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, who called him the best cowboy singer. He began as a radio singer in 1937, and Republic Pictures soon hired him for incidental roles; he also worked with the Hopalong Cassidy unit from 1938 and in numerous Paramount westerns. Producers began giving him specialty numbers in 1941, and in 1944 Walt Mattox cast him opposite Ken Maynard in Harmony Trail. Robert Emmett Tansey then picked Dean to headline a PRC series, the first low-budget westerns made in Cinecolor, with Lash LaRue appearing in the first three. He starred in 20 features, the series closing with The Tioga Kid (1948). Later he made live television experiments for The Marshal of Gunsight Pass, took a specialty number in Varieties on Parade (1951), and recorded country hits he co-wrote, including One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart). He died in 1999.
