Plot summary
David is old and sickly and still rules Israel as its king. Adonijah and Solomon, two of David's sons, are fierce rivals, since either could inherit the crown and only one of them can. Adonijah is ambitious and Solomon is clever. Their rivalry comes out on a hunting expedition, where they race chariots at Adonijah's suggestion and Adonijah loses control of his chariot, so Solomon wins. David then announces before the people that Solomon is the rightful heir over Israel and ordains him as king.
