Ricky Tomlinson
Biography
Ricky Tomlinson is an English actor whose television roles include Bobby Grant in Brookside, DCI Charlie Wise in Cracker and Jim Royle in The Royle Family. Born in Bispham and raised in Liverpool, he worked as a plasterer and played banjo in bands in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He played Bobby Grant from 1982 to 1988 and Jim Royle from 1998 to 2012. He also appeared in Playing the Field and Clocking Off. His film work includes Ken Loach's Riff-Raff (1991), Raining Stones (1993), and Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002), and he took the title role in Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001). Later he starred in the short film Tellin' Dad and released the album Music My Arse in 2001. In 2014 he was awarded the Freedom of Liverpool.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Tomlinson was a banjo player in three bands, including one whose pianist, John Lowe, had been in the Quarrymen, the group that later became the Beatles.
Beyond film
Tomlinson released a CD album called Music My Arse in 2001, and a Christmas single in 2006 that reached number 25 in the UK charts.
First role
On 19 June 2006, Tomlinson appeared for the first time on the UK Channel 4 game show Countdown, as the guest celebrity in its Dictionary Corner.
