Plot summary
England is in recession, and work is hard to find where Bob lives. Bob and his friend Tommy try various ways to bring in money, among them sheep stolen and sold to local butchers, turf lifted from government ground and sold again, and bathroom pipes cleared out. Anne, Bob's wife, is let go by a seamstress factory because she cannot sew. Neither man can hold a job or cut down their debts. Bob still intends to buy Coleen, his daughter, a new outfit for her First Communion, though the price is far beyond the family's means.
