Plot summary
Paul Maddens teaches at St. Bernadette's, the Catholic primary in Coventry, and once hoped for a career in musical theater before negative press reviews ended that. He dislikes Christmas because Jennifer Lore, his girlfriend at drama school, left him at that time of year. Each Christmas his school competes with Oakmoor, the posh private school nearby, for the best-reviewed nativity, and the headteacher, Patricia Bevan, puts him in charge of theirs. She also gives him a classroom assistant, Desmond Poppy, her immature nephew. While the two shop for a Christmas tree, Paul meets Gordon Shakespeare, who runs Oakmoor's plays, and tells him that his former girlfriend Jennifer will make a film of the production. Poppy overhears and passes the claim to reporters, and it spreads.
