Plot summary
Laura Mars is a New York fashion photographer whose pictures place female sexuality beside violence, and the press and feminists call the work exploitative. The night before her book The Eyes of Mars appears, she dreams of an intruder entering a woman's apartment, seen from his own point of view. At the release party she learns that Doris, her photo editor, has been killed. Detective John Neville, who criticizes her pictures without knowing she made them, takes charge of the case. Laura has a second vision during a shoot at Columbus Circle and comes upon the scene it showed. The woman killed, Elaine, had been involved with Laura's ex-husband, Michael, a writer who has returned to New York from San Francisco.

- Producer Jon Peters, who was dating Barbra Streisand, bought the screenplay as a starring vehicle for her, but she turned down the role over "the kinky nature of the story"; it went to Faye Dunaway, who had just won an Oscar for Network (1976).
- Columbia insisted John Carpenter's script be rewritten by David Zelag Goodman as a condition of casting Faye Dunaway, a process Carpenter called "not a pleasant experience" and said left the original script "shat upon".
- George Lucas hired director Irvin Kershner for The Empire Strikes Back (1980) after being impressed by a rough cut of Eyes of Laura Mars.
- Barbra Streisand, who had turned down the lead, felt "Prisoner", the film's torch song, would be a good power ballad for her; she recorded it for the soundtrack and it peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.
- The film was unofficially adapted into the 1984 Tamil film Nooravathu Naal, made alongside the Italian giallo Sette note in nero, and that Tamil film was itself remade as the 1991 Hindi-language film 100 Days.
- Producer Jon Peters commissioned the fashion photographer Helmut Newton to shoot the images that stand in for Laura Mars' portfolio in the film.
