Patricia Franklin

Biography

Patricia Franklin is an English actress who built a long screen career after training at RADA, and she is best known for her work in five Carry On films. Born in East Finchley, London, she grew up going to shows at a nearby amateur theater and joined its drama classes before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first acting job was as a hostess in a 1968 episode of At Last The 1948 Show, followed by nine months in the West End play Uproar in the House. That led producer Peter Rogers to cast her as a farmer's daughter in Carry On Camping (1969), and she went on to appear in Carry On Loving, Bless This House (1972), Carry On Girls (1973), Carry On Behind (1975) and Carry On England (1976). Television work included The Sweeney, The Bill and Play for Today, and she later appeared in all three Three Flavours Cornetto films.

Big break
Franklin appeared for nine months in the West End play Uproar in the House alongside Joan Sims and Peter Butterworth. Peter Rogers, who produced the Carry On films, watched from the audience and gave her a role in the following film, which she took.
A role that slipped away
Rogers was impressed by Franklin's work in Carry On Camping and offered her a nurse part in his next movie, Carry On Again Doctor. She declined it because she was appearing at the Royal Court Theatre in Edward Bond's play Saved.
