Murdock MacQuarrie
Biography
Murdock MacQuarrie was an American actor and director who worked in silent films after 28 years on the stage. Born in San Francisco, California, he attended school in that city. His film career began in 1902 with Biograph, and by about 1912 to 1913 he was working for the Kinemacolor Company of America. One of his early credits was The Count of Monte Cristo (1913). He subsequently became a director at Universal, where he directed during the 1910s. He went back to acting in the early 1920s. He was best remembered for his role in Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times (1936), playing J. Widdecombe Billows, who devised a strange eating machine. MacQuarrie died in 1942.
