Plot summary
Brooklyn, in the final years of the Second World War. Reuven Malter is the son of Professor David Malter, a college teacher and a Zionist who believes in a Jewish state in Palestine. Danny Saunders is the eldest son of Reb Saunders, the Hasidic rebbe who leads the neighborhood's Hasidic community. A baseball game between their schools brings them together, and Danny injures Reuven's eye, leaving Reuven in a patch. Danny's apology at the hospital is refused; a second apology at Reuven's home is accepted, and the two become friends. Danny spends his time at the public library reading psychology books and remembers every word. Reb Saunders approves of the friendship but objects to Professor Malter's writings, and he expects Danny to succeed him as rebbe.
