Plot summary
In the Northern Territory, poachers hunting crocodiles encounter a massive saltwater crocodile that capsizes their boat. The only survivor, John Besser, escapes, but the animal continues to threaten the region. Ranger and herpetologist Steve Harris is ordered by his supervisor Rex Garret to kill the creature. However, Oondabund, leader of the local Aboriginal community, reveals that the crocodile, called Numunwari, is sacred and believed to hold the souls of his people. Oondabund refuses to allow the killing. Harris persuades him to help capture the animal and release it far upriver instead. With Adjaral, they set out along the river to find Numunwari, while Besser, bent on revenge, pursues it as well.
