Plot summary
Cathy is a young girl riding in a car one day when her mother begins making out with a man as she drives. Cathy tries to keep the two of them apart, and the crash she causes kills her mother. Sixteen years later Cathy has grown up and taken the name Helen Selleck, and she works as a psychotic actress. She wins a starring part in an upcoming stage play called Comedy of Blood, a production set in a theater. As the play is prepared, an assailant nobody sees goes after the company one at a time with a shard of glass.

- Nightmares was the first Australian film to use the Steadicam camera, according to its director John D. Lamond.
- The film's bitchy theater critic Bennett Collingswood, played by John Michael Howson, was widely felt to be a veiled attack on Colin Bennett, the film critic of The Age who was often critical of Australian films.
- Director John D. Lamond called Nightmares a "real quickie": he was told to take the money or it would go to another filmmaker, and under Australia's old tax regime the film had to be finished by a set time.
- Nightmares was Gary Sweet's first professional acting job; he later called the film "terrible, diabolical" but said it got him thinking "acting was, you know, all right."
