Plot summary
Dr. Peter Tompson cannot stop the sickness killing the people of his Cornish village, so he asks his old mentor Sir James Forbes for help. Sir James comes with his daughter Sylvia, who is a friend of Peter's wife Alice from childhood. Sylvia drives off a pack of fox hunters chasing a fox, and the same hunters later break up a funeral procession, dropping a coffin over a bridge and exposing the body of John Martinus. When Sir James and Peter open the graves of the recently buried to learn more about the disease, they find the coffins empty. Sylvia, chased by the hunters in the woods, takes shelter in a manor house belonging to Squire Clive Hamilton.
