Plot summary
Tane, a Māori chief, allows a rival tribe to visit the remains of its fallen warriors. His fifteen-year-old son Hongi distrusts the rival leader, Wirepa, and follows him. Wirepa desecrates the grave and blames Hongi for it, using the insult as a pretext for war. Tane is sure his son is blameless, yet he offers Hongi's life to Wirepa to stop the fighting, and Wirepa refuses. His tribe returns in force and kills the men of Tane's tribe, taking Tane's head. Hongi survives and sets out after Wirepa, who has led his men into the Dead Lands, a forbidden area where a monster is said to kill anyone who enters.
