Biography

Katharine Houghton is an American actress and playwright who was born in Hartford and began performing in summer stock during her junior year of college. She made her Broadway debut in 1965 in A Very Rich Woman and took small television roles before her film debut as Joanna Drayton in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), opposite Sidney Poitier, a performance that brought her a Golden Globe nomination and praise from Variety's chief critic. Typecast afterward as the woman in interracial relationships, she left Hollywood for the theater, playing more than 60 leading roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in regional theaters, and winning a 1970 Theatre World Award for A Scent of Flowers. She returned to film in the comedy-drama Mr. North (1988) and later appeared as Kanna in The Last Airbender (2010). Houghton has also written plays and the musical Bookends.
