Plot summary
Richard LeStrange arrives in the village to gather background for his books on witches, vampires and black magic, paying no heed to the warning to beware of Karnstein castle. Inside its walls, three women in shrouds set upon him; they turn out to be students from Miss Simpson's fashionable finishing school, on an educational tour. As he is introduced to Miss Simpson and her pupils, a new arrival, Mircalla Herritzen, catches his eye and he falls in love at once. That evening at the village inn a serving girl is found with two wounds in her neck, and LeStrange no longer takes the Karnstein story for superstition. Meeting the teacher bound for the school, he sends the man on to Vienna and takes his place.
