Plot summary

Richard II inherits the throne of England while still a child. As a man he carries himself as a stately monarch, convinced that God ordained his rule and that no earthly power can question his right to the crown. He governs, though, as a weak and ineffective king. His spending is wasteful, his choice of chancellors unwise, and he stays detached from the country and the people he rules. His cousin Henry Bolingbroke holds land of his own, and Richard seizes it for himself. That act offends the commoners and the barons alike, and both groups decide their king has overstepped.
