Plot summary
Cameras stay inside a live late-night sketch comedy show for six December days, watching one episode being made. The week opens at the Monday morning pitch meeting, where writers bring their jokes. By Tuesday the writers are up all night finishing the sketches due at the next day's table read; fifty are submitted and nine are broadcast. Sets are built and rehearsals run. The project grew out of a film class assignment at New York University; the filmmaker, who had recently hosted the show, chose a cast member as his subject and needed the approval of the show's creator and its host before shooting more footage and expanding it into a feature-length documentary.

- Saturday Night premiered at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival but was then shelved for several years because of legal matters involving its distributor and NBC, finally reaching Hulu on September 26, 2014.
- James Franco made Saturday Night as a film-class assignment for New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2008, and after hosting Saturday Night Live he chose cast member Bill Hader as his subject. He first needed the approval of SNL creator Lorne Michaels and host John Malkovich.
- The film was bought by Oscilloscope Films, which intended to distribute it theatrically, but the studio's founder, Adam Yauch, died in 2012 and complicated matters.
