Biography

Jimmy Page is an English musician and producer best known as the guitarist and founder of Led Zeppelin. Born in Heston in 1944, he first worked as a studio session player in London, becoming a well-known session guitarist in Britain by the middle of the 1960s. He joined the Yardbirds in 1966 and stayed until 1968, then formed Led Zeppelin, which ran from 1968 to 1980. Among his later collaborations were XYZ, the Firm and Page and Plant. His screen work includes The Song Remains the Same (1976), It Might Get Loud (2008), with the Edge and Jack White, and Celebration Day (2012), taken from a 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion. Rolling Stone ranked him No. 3 on its 2015 and 2023 guitarists lists, and he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Yardbirds in 1992 and with Led Zeppelin in 1995.

About the name
While working as a session guitarist, Page went by the nickname 'Lil' Jim Pea' so that people would not mix him up with Big Jim Sullivan, another well known English session guitarist.
A role that slipped away
Page declined an offer to replace Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds in late 1964, out of loyalty to his friend.
Early training
Page was 12 when he first played the guitar. He was mostly self-taught, though he did take some lessons in nearby Kingston.

Page placed a second microphone up to twenty feet from the amplifier and recorded the balance between the two. That technique made him one of the first British producers to capture a band's ambient sound.

Page used "reverse echo" on Led Zeppelin songs including "Whole Lotta Love" and "You Shook Me". He says he came up with the technique in 1967, when he recorded the single "Ten Little Indians".
Own stunts
Page played his guitar with a cello bow, a technique he developed during his session days, as heard on live versions of 'Dazed and Confused' and 'How Many More Times'.
