Biography

Jerrod Carmichael is an American stand-up comedian who also acts, writes and directs. He grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and moved to Los Angeles at 20, working the city's comedy clubs before appearing in a New Faces showcase at Just for Laughs in 2011. A breakout acting role came in Neighbors (2014). Spike Lee directed his first HBO special, Love at the Store (2014), shot at The Comedy Store. He helped create the semi-autobiographical NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show, writing, producing and starring in it from 2015 to 2017. His directing debut, On the Count of Three (2022), which he produced and starred in, competed at Sundance. Rothaniel, his third HBO hour, earned him a Primetime Emmy for writing a variety special and a Writers Guild award. Hosting Saturday Night Live brought a guest actor Emmy nomination, and in 2023 he hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards and had a part in Poor Things (2023).
