Plot summary

Two men in Paris before World War I become close: Jules, an Austrian writer who is shy, and Jim, a Frenchman who is more outgoing. They share a taste for art and a bohemian way of life, and at a slide show they notice a photograph of a goddess with a calm smile. They travel to an island in the Adriatic to see the sculpture. In the city they meet Catherine, who brings that smile to mind, and the three become inseparable. She and Jules begin a relationship, while Jim keeps company with Gilberte, whom he sees apart from the others. Catherine asks Jim to meet her at a cafe. Not long before the war begins, she and Jules marry in Austria.
